80’s population-specific compositions of two related anadromous shad species during the oceanic phase determined by microchemistry of archived otoliths ArchiMer

The specific stock composition and dispersion of anadromous fish species aggregations in the marine environment are poorly known, while they can play a major role in the metapopulation dynamics. Otolith microchemistry has proven to be a powerful tool to address natal origins of anadromous fish. We used archived otolith microchemistry to investigate the population-specific composition of European shads (Alosa alosa and Alosa fallax) subadults in the ocean during the 80’s. The allocation of natal origin was addressed relying on contemporary water and juveniles signatures within a Bayesian model. While great precautions are usually taken when selecting and calculating relevant core metrics, little attention is generally paid to the generation of the multimetric indicator, i.e. the combination of the different core metrics. In the Water Framework Directive (European Union) context, a multimetric fish based index is required to assess the ecological status of French estuarine water bodies. A first indicator called ELFI was developed, however similarly to most indicators, the method to combine the core metrics was rather subjective and this indicator does not provide uncertainty assessment. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla), and generally, temperate eels, are relevant species for studying adaptive mechanisms to environmental variability because of their large distribution areas and their limited capacity of local adaptation. In this context, GenEveel, an individual-based optimization model, was developed to explore the role of adaptive phenotypic plasticity and genetic-dependent habitat selection, in the emergence of observed spatial life-history traits patterns for eels.
